I am just wondering how long will a mare keep making milk. So been 6 weeks now that she and colt have been separated and put them out today and he just nurses away and she lets him! She has no udder and has been off the property for some of the time. If they stay together, she will bag up again right? So frustrating as I do not have separate areas to keep them. Great mare though, just loves being a mom. Also wondering if anyone else has any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks.

Can you divide their pen with an electric fence? Once they have lived next to each other with out the foal nursing for a couple of months the problem will probably solve itself. Some mares/foals are more determined than others so it could take months. If dividing the pen is out of the question you might want to consider sending either the mare or foal somewhere else for the winter. By spring you should be able to be fairly confidant that the weaning is complete. You'll notice I said 'fairly confidant', thats because I have seen a 2 yr old still nursing and the mare allowing it. Good luck Oh, just remembered there are some ointments available to but on the mares bag that are supposed to taste nasty and stop the foal from wanting to nurse. I've never tried them so can't say whether they work or not or where to get them.

Thanks I tried udder balm but didn't deter him! Yea the mare is at the neighbours but I hate not being able to check on her everyday. Will keep trying each month. They have been separated by electric for a month and a half. I was just wondering if she would bag up again and start making milk again.
