With the winter season making her approach, I am considering instead of hauling buckets of water out to the horses, I am considering purchasing a heated water bucket. I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with these and where in the great North one can purchase them.

I have the green one's from princess auto (5gals) they do the job but use a lot of power and they sometimes get so hot the horses wont drink the water, which I started plugging them in at night and unplugging them during the day, allowing water to cool down and save on some energy.

Before I got my water system installed, I used a 500 gal trough with an imerseable heater. Husband put a piece of plywood over Styrofoam on the top with a hole cut out for drinking. Water did not freeze and did not have to fill every day. Now you can buy the troughs with the heater installed and you just plug them in.

I have a big one as well and the float heaters work awesome, but a cheaper way I have done this when there was no hydro, is to get an old freezer(take the hinges off for safety) fill it and use it all day , then in the evening just place the lid on, it is insulated enough to not freeze to hard, next morning take off the lid and take out any ice bits, works really well unless it gets to -40 for a few days,
